THE SYLLABLE THIEF

THE SYLLABLE THIEF

1    Stop!

2   What for?

3   You know what?

4   No, I do not.

5   Where were you last night?

6   I was home all night. Why?

7   Are you sure you were at home?

8   Yes, I am sure I was at home.

9   I have word that you were not at home.

10 Well, if I was not at home, where was I?

11 A clerk at a store said he saw you last night.

12 Where was the store, and who is the clerk who saw me?

13 It was a store near your home.  The clerk said he knows you.

14 What is the name of the store where the clerk said he knows me?

15 It’s the Red and White Mart and is just two short blocks from your house.

16 I go there all there all  of the time and I know all the clerks. But I was home.

17 The Red and White Mart was robbed last night.  The night clerk said that you were the thief.

18 Why on earth would I do that?  I’m no thief.  There’s no way I would rob a store.

19 The clerk said you held up the store at gun point.  You asked for cash or you would shoot.

20 I do not own a gun and I have no need to rob a store.  Why would I do that?

21 Sir, please go with me so we can clear this up.  The clerk said he knows you and was quite shocked.

22 It is I who is shocked. I’ll go with you.  I do not own a gun and I’m sure not a thief.

23 The clerk who said he saw you is in the car right there.  We need for the clerk to see you once more.

24  I see the car but I do not know that clerk.  He does not work at the Red and White Mart. That’s for sure.

25  Last night was his first night on the job.  He was stunned that the store was robbed.  He knows you and said you did it.

24  Well, I’m sure I don’t know him.  Why would he say he knows me?  Is this all a dream? Am I in a dream?

23  It’s not a dream, sir.  This is real, and the clerk says he knows you and he knows that you are the thief.

22  I am not a thief!  I do not own a gun!  I do not know that man.  I tell you! I don’t!

21  The clerk says it was you who robbed the store.  We’ll have to take you in.  Then we’ll search your house.

20  Can I speak to that clerk?  He has named the wrong man.  I know we can clear this all up.

19   Please come with me sir.  You can’t talk to the clerk.  If you aren’t the thief, we’ll soon know.

18   And how will you do that?  This clerk is wrong.  I know I’m not the man you want.

17  Let’s head on in.  You’ll soon see why we’re sure you’re the man who robbed the store.

16  I know the owner of the store.  I’ve known him for years. He’ll vouch for me.

15  You can call him if you like.  Just get in the car.  Here we go.

14  Mike, this is John Ward.  They say that I robbed your store last night.

13  John, that can’t be true. You’re an honest man and a good friend.

12  Can you help clear me?  One of your clerks has named me.

11 What is the clerk’s name?  We have a new clerk there.

10  Sir, what is the clerk’s name. Mike wants to know.

9    His name’s Mack Brown. He said he was new.

8   Mike, the clerk’s name is a Mack Brown.

7   I have no clerk by that name.

6   Can you speak to the cop?

5   Sure, give him your phone.

4   Sir, you are wrong.

3   No Mack Brown?

2   No sir.

1   Hmm.
